Guys in bars with guitars. You know the type I’m talking about, right? With a repertoire of every Dylan and Petty song, they’re striving to be the next John Mayer. The question is do we need another Mayer-wannabe? At first glance it would be easy to write Ian Edwards off as just that. But first impressions are deceiving. While Edwards can certainly be compared to Mayer and others like him when listening to a few of his tracks, he’s easily a more accomplished vocalist with a wider musical versatility than the typical bar player – or the national signed act for that matter. By playing alternatic rock injected with irresistible pop hooks, he turned enough heads to win a recent national unsigned artist competition.
Case in point: his songs “Now That’s Over” and “Janey” are pure pop sweetness as good as anything getting hundreds of spins on Top40 radio stations across the world. Both are uptempo numbers – think Justin Beiber if he could actually play and write his own music – and different from other more rock-based songs on his collection. The fact he can change styles effortlessly while retaining his signature sound is quite a feat for a young musician.
